Summary
Apple has been accused of contempt of court in relation to a ruling against the tech giant last year that demanded it allowed external payment options for in-app purchases.
Following a Supreme Court ruling in January that upheld the original injunction, Epic Games’ Tim Sweeney has announced it will relaunch its Fortnite game on Apple’s App Store next week.
Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, who issued the original ruling and Wednesday’s contempt order, referred the matter to the District Attorney to decide if Apple should face criminal proceedings.
The judge said Apple had engaged in a plan to thwart the original order and then covered it up, charging a 27% commission on all off-app purchases and adding barriers tostop users looking for alternative payment options.
Apple CEO Tim Cook and VP finance Alex Roman were specifically called out for misleading the court over the company’s internal discussions.
