Summary
According to a new survey by Informa and Omdia, 80% of game developers are currently working on a project for the PC, an increase from 66% in 2021.
This is the highest percentage of any platform since the survey started collecting data in 2018, when 60% of developers were working on a PC game.
The surge in the popularity of PC gaming has been attributed to the rising popularity of the Steam Deck, even though Valve has only acknowledged sales in the millions thus far.
Game developers’ interest in the PC as a platform has also increased, from 62% in 2021 to 74% in 2022.
The PC has long been the most popular platform for developers to work on, outpacing consoles and mobile platforms, which typically see between 12-36% of developers’ active work.
The number of individual game releases on Steam topped 18,974 in 2024, a 32% increase from 2023.
