Doom: The Dark Ages wants to be more like the original Doom

Summary
id Software’s modern Doom games have honoured the look and feel of the original without being devoted to gameplay conventions that can feel dated, but the studio felt the complexity of tasks like managing resources and weapon switching needed simplifying.
For Doom: The Dark Ages, controls have been narrowed down to just three context-sensitive buttons, with the standard weapon trigger and melee buttons complemented by a shieldsaw that can be used in a variety of contexts depending on the situation.
Creative designer Hugo Martin said the goal was to make The Dark Ages as accessible as the original Doom, which he said has stood the test of time due to its “incredibly streamlined” combat.
A focus on accessibility could also broaden the appeal of the game beyond the traditional gamer audience, attracting newcomers and players who may not consider themselves gamers but enjoy immersive action experiences.
id is yet to confirm a release date for The Dark Ages, which is currently in development.
