Summary

  • Tech website Ars Technica usually provides an in-depth review of new Nintendo hardware, but this time around, Nintendo has restricted early press access to the new Switch 2 (aka Nintendo Switch OLED), which confounded the site’s reviewers because the new version of the console will reportedly ship with a day-one system software update and some launch games that will supposedly make pre-release evaluation more difficult.
  • As a result, the site will have to wait until after the console is in users’ hands to provide a full review.
  • In the meantime, Ars Technica was able to gain some hands-on time with the Switch 2 at a preview event held by Nintendo, during which it discovered that the GameChat feature can generate captions for live speech, which appears in a box that can be set to the side of the gameplay and impressively updates captions from multiple speakers at the same time.
  • Other features of the new console that were noted were the wider aperture of the new dock’s connector to better align with the majority of HDMI cables out there and better system-level menus.
