During a hands-on event with Nintendo, Ars Technica got to try out the new Mario Kart game, “Mario Kart World,” which comes with the Switch 2 console.
The game is slated to be released alongside the Switch 2 this Christmas, and players have been intrigued by the “Free Roam” mode teased for months.
After trying out the mode, Ars Technica says it feels like the “hidden gem” of the game and perhaps the console’s launch.
To access Free Roam, players must press the plus button; from there, they are taken to a version of the game’s map where they are untimed and can explore the different areas.
The purpose of Free Roam is to allow players to explore the map and locate blue P-Switches, with each switch activating a challenge nearby.
The combination of racing, exploration, and collecting aspects of games like Diddy Kong Racing, Forza Horizon, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater respectively, creates a unique experience for players.
