Summary

  • Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has posted Q4 earnings which saw its data centre division earn $3.9bn, a 23% rise boosted by its Epyc server processors and Instinct AI accelerators.
  • Its client segment also earned $2.3bn thanks to sales of its Ryzen CPUs.
  • However, the gaming division earned $563m, down 59% YoY, as sales of its dedicated graphics cards and semi-custom chips, used in game consoles such as Xbox and PlayStation, declined.
  • Its new Radeon RX 9000-series graphics cards, launched in early March, are hoping toaddress the sluggish sales and bring “high-quality gaming to mainstream players”, positioning them alongside rival Nvidia’s offerings priced between 800.
  • The GPUs are also expected to rely on upscaling algorithms to achieve playable frame rates at resolutions lower than 4K.
