Electronic Arts (EA) has released the source code for the first three Command & Conquer games onto GitHub, enabling fans to create mods for the classic strategy games.
The games, which were released between 1995 and 2000, are among the most influential real-time strategy games ever made and are considered landmarks in the genre.
The move is a welcome one in that it gives fans the opportunity to update the games for modern systems, which the release on GitHub facilitating easier access for would-be modders.
However,Vintage Software, the source also provides a crucial historical archive for a genre that has fallen out of fashion in recent years.
Along with the source code, EA also opened up Steam Workshop support for the entire Command & Conquer franchise, which includes nine other games.
