Summary
Shadowveil: Legend of the Five Rings is a new roguelite auto-battler which is the first video game adaptation of the Legend of the Five Rings fantasy franchise.
Auto battlers aren’t one of the reviewer’s go-to genres because they dislike the punishing uncertainty of being responsible for preparation but having no control over battles.
Despite this, they find the game intriguing and a mostly satisfying mix of overwhelming odds and achievement after approximately seven hours of gameplay, although they think it could do more to soften its learning curve.
Their disappointment turns to terror, however, when relying on computer-controlled fighters to do the right thing in battles, watching helplessly as they are consumed by algorithmic choices, bad luck, or poor strategy.
Nevertheless, they feel that Shadowveil merits play, if only for the satisfaction of victory against the odds and the intrigue of gradually discovering different run types and strategies.
