Mario Kart World’s $80 price isn’t that high, historically

Nintendo has caused a stir among gamers by announcing that its new Mario Kart World game would be released at a suggested retail price of $80 in the US
This price point is a new landmark for both Nintendo and the gaming industry more broadly.
While $70 has been the highest price point for games which are not deluxe editions in recent years, this has been eroded by the rapidly rising inflation rates of the last five years.

To find this information, we created a basket of games for each year, looking at the highest price point with the exclusion of deluxe and collectors’ editions, and calculated the average across eight different genres.
This avoids the effect of anomalies within certain genres, or genres that may have especially high or low price points.
