Summary
Genshin Impact’s developers, Hoyoverse, have settled a lawsuit with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which alleged the game unfairly targeted children with misleading loot box mechanics.
Loot boxes in the game were allegedly geared towards children without disclosing the real costs and odds of obtaining prizes.
As part of the settlement, Hoyoverse will pay a $20m fine and be banned from selling loot boxes to under-16s without parental consent.
The company will also have to delete all data it holds on players under the age of 13.
Hoyoverse described the allegations as “inaccurate” but accepted the settlement to “value the trust” of its players.
The ruling must be approved by a federal judge before it takes effect.
