Viktor Antonov, the visual designer behind Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, has died aged 52.
There has been no official announcement regarding his death, but it has been confirmed by numerous colleagues on social media.
Antonov began his gaming career in 1997, working on Redneck Rampage as a map painter, moving on to the art deco-inspired shooter Kingpin and later working for Valve on Half-Life 2.
His work on the game’s setting of City 17 is particularly admired and has influenced many subsequent pessimistic sci-fi games.
Following this, he worked at Arkane Studios on Dishonored, and worked on several other titles including the Doom reboot and Battlecry, as well as co-founding Eschatology Entertainment to work on Project DG prior to his death.
