Summary
A trial between former Bungie director Christopher Barrett and game companies Bungie and Sony is heating up, with Sony recently releasing textual evidence in a 128-page legal document that they say proves Barrett’s “predatory behaviour” towards female staff.
This included messages asking female employees to play “Truth or Dare,” and asking questions about their physical features; calling female employees drunk late at night; and otherwise pushing boundaries with female employees and creating an unprofessional intimacy.
Barrett was fired in a shakeup last year, and he sued the companies for breach of contract and defamation, arguing that the investigation was flawed and the real reason for his dismissal was to avoid a $45m bonus payout.
Sony’s new documents essentially provide a line-by-line rebuttal of Barrett’s argument, and claim that his behaviour meeting the definition of gross misconduct and gross negligence.
Barrett’s legal team calls Sony’s arguments “cherry-picked,” and says that the company is “scapegoating” its former director, attempting to deflect from the large bonus payout.
