Summary
Warner Bros has decided to close three video game development studios as it seeks to achieve profitability.
The studios that will be closed are Player First Games (Multiversus), Warner Bros Games San Diego and Monolith (well known for games such as No One Lives Forever, F.E.A.R., Condemned: Criminal Origins and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor).
As a result, the troubled Wonder Woman adaptation, which was being developed by Monolith, has also been cancelled.
Warner Bros confirmed the studio closures and the cancellation of Wonder Woman in a statement, adding that “this is not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them”.
This continues a difficult couple of years for Warner Bros, which has witnessed the underperformance of its recent big releases.
The company is seeking to “get back to a ‘fewer but bigger franchises’ strategy” and to produce “high-quality games”.
Unfortunately, the memo also confirmed that layoffs are likely.
