The grimy sci-fi in Songs Of Rats feels like Mothership RPG meets Fighting Fantasy

Rock, Paper, Shotgun writer Nathan Dittberner has published an optimistic review of Songs of Rats, the new RPG released on Steam yesterday, singling out its “small effort, large danger” gameplay.
Players navigate a roguelike space labyrinth, needing to manage resources and battle enemies whilst uncovering the secrets of civilisations past.
The game has a retro-futurist 80s vibe, with visuals that are “bitty” and battles that are punishingly difficult, akin to experiencing what it’s like for a real rat to fight a fridge.
Yet, whilst the gameplay is challenging, it is also relaxing due to the plentiful horrors it evokes, and gives a “bountiful click-to-horrible-events ratio” according to Dittberner.
The full game was released on Steam on 14 December 2022, following a demo and having been successfully funded on Kickstarter in 2020.
