Square Enix sue mech game developer for allegedly recycling parts from Front Mission

Summary
Gaming studio BlackJack, known as HK Ten Tree in a lawsuit against it by Square Enix, has had production of its mech game Metal Storm (Mecharashi) halted after Square sued for allegedly using parts created for an abandoned Front Mission game.
Front Mission 2089: Borderscape was due for release on iOS and Android, but was cancelled a few months after its April 2022 announcement.
Square Enix claimed that materials created for the Front Mission game were used in Mecharashi, including gameplay mechanics and visual designs.
Mecharashi was released in China and Japan in October 2024, and is described as a “mecha-themed tactical turn-based game” in English on its Steam page.
The gaming giant has sent DMCA takedowns to get the game removed, but it is now back on Steam thanks to a counterclaim.
Square Enix wants BlackJack to remove the allegedly infringing material and pay $150,000 per infringement.
