Summary

  • Communications Workers of America (CWA), which helped establish the game workers’ union at Activision Blizzard, has announced United Videogame Workers-CWA (UVW-CWA) to organise the North American games industry.
  • UVW-CWA’s mission will be to not only build community and solidarity, but also to build large-scale education campaigns about labour organising in the video game industry, and will commence with a campaign around lay-offs.
  • At this year’s GDC, they will be sharing a petition to address layoffs across the industry, and hope to gain support for the new sector-wide union.
  • They have also produced a video game worker bill of rights, which sets standards for hiring, crunch, healthcare for contractors and protections against other forms of inequality.
  • The move follows the success of strikes and union efforts at Activision Blizzard, Bungie, Rocksteady, Apple and Google last year.
