Summary

I haven’t the foggiest idea whether Cinder City will be any good or not. Visually, if you showed it to me without a logo or any form of identifying information, I’m not even sure I could distinguish it from any other sci-fi shooter. But the shooting looks PS3 as hell, with slightly awkward movements made moreso by the realistic look, and a futuristic HUD that seems like it’s meant to be diegetic. How it actually feels is another question, but one that some of us can soon answer, as sign ups for a playtest are now open. The pre-alpha playtest, which you can sign up to here, will be held from August 14th to 16th, but there are two caveats: you need to be over the age of 16, and you need to be based in the US. That means I myself have no chance of confirming or denying to you whether or not the game is PS3 as hell (though I imagine considering how this is a pre-alpha playtest some kind of NDA would be required anyway). One thing I can’t tell you is how much of that sweet, elusive RAM you might need for it. In case you forgot, this is the same Cinder City that originally said you would need a ridiculously large 64GB of RAM in order to just run the game at recommended settings. That turned out not to be the case after all, as these were later dropped to 32GB, a number that’s still just for people who the ongoing crisis is just something they read about in the news sometimes. Alternatively, if Cinder City is a name that makes you think, “Huh? Wassat?” then I’ll give you the rundown. It’s set in a near-future Seoul where you take on the role of a Cinderknight, which is cooler than it sounds because it does just kind of translate to “obscenely beautiful sci-fi soldier person.” A mysterious incident has taken place and now there are Resident Evil-esque monsters roaming the streets, amongst other super soldier looking folks, and it’s your job to take them down. It’s both open world and multiplayer, but just the PvE kind, with the likes of dungeons and raids to take on too. No release date attached to Cinder City just yet, so if you’re based in the US, you’ll just have to try your luck on this playtest.
