Summary

In perhaps the least surprising Fallout news since Raul from New Vegas confirmed that ghouls with dodgy knees don’t enjoy sneaking, the person behind an AI-generated browser game dubbed Fallout: New York has claimed to have recieved a cease and desist message from Bethesda parent company ZeniMax. Their creation, if such a term fits, was generated using Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 tech. The person behind Fallout: New York, a self-styled “AI Creative” going by the all caps handle CHRIS FIRST on Twitter (because of course this went down on there), began posting about it earlier this week. Based on the trailer fir it they posted, the game’s map looked to resemble somewhat of a mangled mishmash of the post-apocalyptic big apple with a GTA 4 map mod someone’s cobbled together by spending 20 minutes filling streets with clutter. CHRIS FIRST boasted of it having quests, companions, dialogue trees, V.A.T.S. and a Pip-Boy, just like a non-slop fallout game. The NPC faces in it are utterly hideous in a silly putty-ish sort of way that might be charming in a non-slop game, but here just contribute to the feeling of undercooked leftovers cobbled together by computer brains. “It’s all free and I make 0 money on it,” the game’s prompter wrote in reply to someone joking that legal action might be incoming. “I hope they don’t ask me to take it down. I really love Fallout and this was just a fun tech demo. But I should add a quest where you have to serve someone papers, but they keep running away.” Fallout: New York, a full Fallout game you play in your browser, built with Claude Opus 5.5. — CHRIS FIRST (@chrisfirst) Quests. Dialogue trees. V.A.T.S. A working Pip-Boy. Zero texture files. Zero sound files. Every building, weapon, face and sound is generated by code.[pic.twitter.com/58Vls0mOYx][September 28, 2026] It seems no amount of running could stop CHRIS FIRST being served what appears to be a cease and desist notice from Bethesda parent company ZeniMax over Fallout: New York. If indeed it is one, the use of the domain name “fallout.nyc” looks like the strand the company have opted to pick at in order to protect their copyrighted material. I’ve asked Bethesda for comment. Hey @BethesdaStudios,” CHRIST FIRST declared in response to the alleged notice. “How about you make a Fallout game instead so I don’t have to? Sorry to everyone who enjoyed the game! But the suits got involved and the fun is over.” If you’d like to play a community-made Fallout game that isn’t AI slop, I can heartily recommend massive mod Fallout: London. Its quests, chatter, and the rest were made by humans who’re now pursuing indie development while putting out DLC as and when they can. Read this next

“It wasn’t a planned thing”: Breaking Benjamin singer on his mid-gig Fallout 4 mod promo being down to a broken drum and his love of VR - I’m not saying Fallout 4 modding drama gets to people, but here’s Breaking Benjamin’s singer begging concertgoers to try his AI-assisted first person mod - I’m not saying Bethesda are trolling me specifically, but Fallout 4 and Skyrim updates are imminent just as I’ve modded up the latter for the first time in ages
