As the games industry continues to be a mess, the devs behind Hyper Light Drifter share why they took to Patreon

Summary
Independent games developer Heart Machine has spoken to The Verge about its decision to turn to Patreon to increase revenues.
Founder Alx Preston said it was also about bringing the studio closer to its audience, with changes in the industry making money hard to come by.
While Patreon won’t deliver a huge slice of revenue, the studio is hoping that by engaging more, it won’t have to constantly seek funding from publishers.
Currently, Heart Machine is working on Hyper Light Breaker, a live-service sequel to its 2016 hit Hyper Light Drifter, as well as Possessor(s).
While the former received a rocky early access launch, the company hopes that engagement with audiences will result in improvements to the game.
Heart Machine is one of many indie developers struggling to stay afloat amidst challenging industry dynamics.
