Summary
Actor Andy Serkis, famous for his performance capture roles in films such as The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and Planet of the Apes, has said that the film industry has changed its view of the cultural value of the gaming industry, and now sees it as a valuable storytelling tool.
“There used to be a terrific snobbery from the film industry - [games] were the lesser cousin…it was just about the gameplay, hack ‘n’ slash, and killing people,” he told Game Watcher.
However, he said that games had now come of age, and actors see them as “another part of the palette of what it is to be a performer.”
Serkis was speaking ahead of the release of his turn-based RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, in which he voices a character.
He set up a performance capture studio in 2004 after working on Heavenly Sword, to explore immersive storytelling outside of cinema and TV.
