Borderlands 4 launching early has literally 0% to do with GTA 6's release date, Marathon or anything save confidence, says Gearbox boss

The release date of Borderlands 4 has been brought forward from 23 September to 12 September to avoid competing with Bungie and Sony’s relaunch of the Marathon franchise on the same date.
There has been speculation that the change was made to avoid clashing with the yet-to-be-announced GTA 6 release date, however, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford has claimed the earlier date is to do with the excitement surrounding the game and its current developmental progress.
Pitchford has come under fire from critics on social media site Twitter, with many accusing him of trying to put a positive spin on the date change.
GTA 6 is expected to be released in 2025, although no official date has been confirmed.
Last November, Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick commented that while development slippage is an issue in the industry, they were “highly confident” in the planned Fall 2025 release date for GTA 6.
