A Path Of Exile 2 patch was meant to turn on the loot tap but it started deleting players' skills instead

Summary
Path Of Exile 2 developers Grinding Gear Games attempted to fix the loot drop system, which players complained was not rewarding enough.
However, a bug in the update saw skill gems deleted for many players, forcing the developers to take the game offline while they attempted to rectify the issue.
The game was down for five hours, with developers stating that the reason for the deletion of the skill gems was a database mishap.
The update, which was meant to increase rarity in loot drops, had seemingly deleted the skill gems, which are used for attacks, spells and defensive magicks.
Although the game is now back online, with the original update rolled back, the fixed update for the loot system is set to be released later.
Developers apologised for the inconvenience, and promised to improve their procedures to prevent such a long downtime occurring again.
This is the second recent outage after a similar episode occurred earlier this month.
