Tamagotchi and Quake both join World Video Game Hall Of Fame

Summary
Four new games have been inducted into the Video Game Hall of Fame at New York’s Strong Museum of Play: Quake, Goldeneye, Defender and virtual pet Tamagotchi.
The decision to include the last of these was based, partly, on how it allowed users to ‘feel connection, intimacy and personalisation’ in a non-competitive context.
While the earliest, Spacewar!, dates from 1977, the most recent is Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us, reflecting the growing retro relevance of modern titles.
Meanwhile, the choices also reflect the development of gaming in meaningful ways, with Quake credited with ‘the creation of esports as an industry’ through its widespread adoption of competitive multiplayer gameplay.
This is also one of the primary reasons why Quake’s spiritual successor, Rocket League, is so widely loved.
