Summary
In a recent interview, lead writer of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, has revealed the game took a different direction during development and was originally set in a ‘steampunk Victorian England’ with zombies and aliens.
It was a call with potential investors that led to the game’s overhaul, with the team encouraged to think bigger about the game’s vision.
In the game’s current format, it is an RPG set in a post-apocalyptic France, which Rock Paper Shotgun reviewer Nic calls “operatically, hauntingly, and slightly unhingedly French”
The game’s developer Sandfall Interactive is based in Malmö, Sweden, and the game’s French flavour was reportedly a deliberate choice to distinguish it from games set in London.
