How to stop your MacBook from turning on when you open the lid
1 min read
Summary
In 2016, Apple started to include an auto power-on feature in its MacBooks that turned on the laptop when the lid was opened or when USB-C power was plugged in with the lid open.
Some users, however, found this feature annoying, especially when trying to clean the screen or when undertaking activities where they did not want the MacBook turning on automatically.
In January 2025, Apple added an official way to turn this feature off for M1 and newer MacBooks.
For Intel MacBooks, there was already a Terminal command to turn it off, but this command did not work for M1 MacBooks.
To turn off the auto power-on feature, users must enter a command in the Terminal, after which they should fully shut down the MacBook and then test it by opening the lid to see if the setting has taken effect.
To reverse the setting, users should enter a different command in the Terminal.
