Wildtype has become the fourth company to receive approval from the US regulator to sell its cultivated salmon, following a “no questions” letter regarding the safety of its product.
Cultivated meat is regulated by the US FDA whereas the USDA shares responsibility for seafood, and Wildtype’s salmon is now available in one Portland restaurant.
The FDA’s pre-market safety consultation is voluntary, but receiving the regulator’s approval is considered a “helpful marker” for marketability, according to IP lawyer Dr Emily Nytko-Lutz.
Wildtype has opened a waitlist for five more restaurants to stock its salmon, alongside fellow meat providers Upside Foods and Good Meat, which both already sell cultivated chicken in the US.
