The Trump administration has made changes to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) website, removing the term “climate change” and replacing it with “future conditions” amid a broader purge by the president of health and environmental data that conflicts with his pro-fossil fuel message.
This comes after Trump’s inauguration, and a day after which he signed an executive order establishing a “review council” to assess whether FEMA is capable of addressing disasters and rallies allegations of political bias.
Researchers have found a near 40% drop in the use of the term “climate change” across various environmental agency websites under the Trump administration, with the new FEMA webpage now making only a whispered reference to changing climate as the cause of rising disaster incidents.
This move could seriously affect FEMA’s ability to carry out its role effectively as climate change continues to exacerbate extreme weather disasters.
