Summary
Grassroots environmental alliance Climate Justice Alliance (CJA), faced withdrawal of approximately $50m in funding after it called for a “free Palestine”.
The group faced a backlash after advocating for a cease fire in Gaza.
It was due to distribute the money in subgrants for environmentally focused projects to communities experiencing the most pollution, which are often communities of colour.
The group consists of 100 grassroots organisations, including the Indigenous Environmental Network and the NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice Programme.
The Biden administration had sought to release funding from the Inflation Reduction Act before Trump took office, when he pledged to rescind unspent funds allocated under the act.
Trump’s EPA appointee Lee Zeldin posted on Twitter that he had blocked the grant.
