Summary
Energy Transfers is suing Greenpeace for $300m for its alleged involvement with the protests surrounding the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.
Standing Rock grassroots activists say the lawsuit, which accuses Greenpeace of inciting unlawful behaviour and spreading false information, is a threat to free speech for all; payment of the damages demanded would equal 10 times the environmental group’s annual budget.
Greenpeace has received support from over 400 organisations and celebs such as Jane Fonda and Susan Sarandon, who warn that the case could have a chilling effect on peaceful protest.
