Summary
A new lawsuit filed against the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) claims that President Trump broke the law when he removed all mentions of climate change from its websites.
The Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY) and two environmental groups that are also plaintiffs in the case, said they had previously relied on information on USDA websites to help farmers faced with climate change-driven extreme weather events, as well as to access funding for “climate-smart farming”.
Since taking office, Trump has removed “scores of vitally important webpages” that address the topic, citing it as a “hoax”, the lawsuit claims.
In addition to the Agriculture Department, such actions by the Trump administration have also seen climate-related information removed from agencies including the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Energy Department and the Department of Health and Human Services.
In related news, a separate lawsuit filed against Trump, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Commerce last week accused the president of violating the Constitution by ignoring climate change.
