The US has increased anti-dumping duties on solar cells from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam to betweennothing and3,521%, rendering them uneconomical.
The four countries accounted for more than three quarters of US module imports in 2023.
The US Department of Commerce found that Chinese producers were sending products through these countries to avoid US duties, to the detriment of US producers who were unable to compete.
The new duties could lead to a revival of American manufacturing of solar panels and modules, but could slow the progress that states have been making in hitting decarbonisation targets as the cost of panels rises.
