States Are Banning Forever Chemicals. Industry Is Fighting Back
1 min read
Summary
New Mexico has passed legislation that would see the state become the third in the US to ban the use of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in consumer products.
Ten other states have already implemented a ban or have imposed limits on the chemicals’ use in products such as cookware, carpets, clothes and cosmetics.
PFAS, known as “forever chemicals” because of their longevity, have been linked to high cholesterol, fertility issues and cancer.
The legislation will likely be welcomed by consumers but will likely face tough opposition from the chemical and consumer goods industries, which have been lobbying against the growing number of restrictions on the chemicals.
The legislation will also face pushback due to its specific exemptions, including for the important PFAS chemical fluoropolymers, which is used in non-stick cookware.
