This Artificial Wetland Is Reusing Wastewater to Revive a Lost Ecosystem

Located in the Colorado River delta, the Mexicali wastewater treatment plant, Las Arenitas, serves the dual purpose of cleaning wastewater and supporting local wildlife and communities.
Working in tandem with the nearby Hardy River, the plant returns 50% of treated water to the river to support local flora and fauna.
Since its inception, the plant’s design and capacity have been upgraded, most recently with the addition of an artificial wetland to increase the cleanliness of the discharged water.
Following upgrades, bird populations in the area have increased from eight to more than 160 species.
The facility aims to improve water regulation, education, and recharge in the region.
The plant’s deputy director believes that more must be done to improve water use in the region, including investing in new technologies and more sustainable practices.
