On 14 March, a power cut left large parts of Spain and Portugal without electricity for several hours, and in some areas, it took almost a day for the supply to be fully restored.
While the exact cause of the incident is yet to be confirmed, it is thought that it could be linked to the growing use of renewable energy sources.
Two drops in generation, possibly related to renewable energy sources, caused a disruption that led to a disconnect from the grid.
This disconnect was a security measure to prevent damage to infrastructure, and once the disconnect occurred, the rest of the country was also cut off from the grid, hence the reason the entire country was affected.
