There is a potential risk that theCallableSteroid, which is due to pass Earth in December 2032, could hit the planet.
It has been estimated that there is a 2% chance of impact, which could result in an explosion equivalent to 8 million tonnes of TNT.
A 50-kilometre radius around the impact zone would be affected.
It is predicted that the area at risk would stretch from northern South America, across the Pacific Ocean, to southern Asia, the Arabian Sea and Africa.
NASA engineer David Rankin has mapped out a “risk corridor” of where the asteroid could hit.
This isn’t the first time a threat like this has been raised, and international space agencies are confident that the risk level will drop to zero as more information about the asteroid’s trajectory is uncovered.
Continuous monitoring of the asteroid’s movements has been activated as part of the UN’s emergency protocol for protection of the planet.
