Summary
Four officials from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have been placed at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), classified as the “wallet” of the NIH according to Wired magazine.
They are Luke Farritor, Rachel Riley, Jeremy Lewin, and Clark Minor, with links to both the NIH and General Services Administration (GSA).
Minor is the chief information officer of the Department of Health and Human Services, whilst Lewin is believed to have played a part in dismantling the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
The NIH is the biggest federal backer of biomedical research, with a budget of $48bn, and is a subsidiary of HHS, now run by Robert F Kennedy Jr.
The NIH has frozen $1.5bn for medical research funding and cut funding to universities, amidst the Trump administration’s executive orders and policies impacting research.
