US scientists and academics working in Antarctica have expressed concerns that research projects will be abandoned and stations closed due to funding cuts and job losses following Elon Musk’s recent overhaul of the US government.
Other nations, including China and Russia, may move to take over projects and influence policy in Antarctica should the US retreat from its position of leadership.
Scientists fear that important research on climate change and rising sea levels will be disrupted.
There are also fears that the delicate geopolitical balance in Antarctica could be upset by moves by China and Russia to exploit reserves of oil and gas and expand fishing territories.
US scientists and academics are reportedly being recruited by foreign governments, including China, resulting in a “brain drain” of skilled workers.
