Game Bub is an FPGA-based handheld that emulates Nintendo’s handhelds up to the Game Boy Advance.
It can play NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance games both from ROM and from the original cartridges, with the help of an optional link cable that allows users to interface with the Game Boy and Game Boy Color.
The device, which is open source, also offers Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, a 480 x 320 display and a switch-like dock to connect to an external monitor.
Its creator Eli says an FPGA is not needed for emulation, but offers better support for interfacing with hardware such as controllers and cartridges.
To create Game Bub, Eli chose a Xilinx XC7A100T with integrated memory, and a bespoke PCB with a built-in controller, a speaker, a rechargeable lithium battery and an SD card reader, among other things.
