The Swedish Maker decided to try a spot of woodworking with a difference by attempting a furniture build using a Virtual Reality (VR) headset.
Wearing the Meta Quest 3 headset, Swedish Maker was able to view real-world tools while overlaying digital plans in what was termed a “VR fever dream”
The build took place whilst wearing the headset to sketch ideas, and cut plywood, amongst other tasks, with thetransparent AR view of passthrough mode.
The experiment was useful in illustrating the current limitations of the technology, with depth perception, measuring, and screen delay all issues during the build.
However, the exercise did highlight the usefulness of being able to overlay PDFs in real-time without needing a computer.
The article concludes by suggesting that the technology may become more widely used by woodworkers in the future, perhaps when some of the current limitations are overcome, and that AR and VR has potential in the workshop.
