Scrapyard Vacuum Dehydrator Sucks the Water from Hydraulic Oil
1 min read
Summary
SpankRanch has devised an ingenious method of removing water from oil using a retired gas cylinder welded to a steel frame to form a vacuum dehydrator.
He used a gas cylinder because they are manufactured to extremely high standards of thickness and are therefore ideal for containing pressure when the vacuum is pulled.
The neck of the cylinder is pointing down, with a fill port in the bottom, and the side of the tank has been drilled and threaded for various valves, including a port for a vacuum pump.
The hacked machine works by heating up the oil in the tank and pulling a vacuum, which allows the water to be gently boiled off without “cooking” the oil, and the process takes a few hours to treat a 10-gallon batch.
This is a cost-effective and timesaving solution for dealing with contaminated hydraulic fluid in heavy equipment.
