A team from How To Make Everything has successfully used Leonardo da Vinci’s design for a screw-cutting machine to create a perfect metal screw thread.
The project’s goal was to improve the capacity for the machine to produce more precise components for itself, in order to then produce better leadscrews.
After trying several methods, with varying results, the most successful tactic was found to be casting a screw in bronze using a pre-existing normal screw as a mould.
With the successful creation of the screw, the team also explains that just a few more steps could result in the creation of a tap.
