A maker who goes by the name of Hyperspace Pirate on YouTube created a hand-cranked generator that produces plasma from electricity and magnets.
The generator is mostly 3D printed and comprises eight copper coils and a couple of 40×20 N52 neodymium magnets.
The 4.5:1 gear on the crank side spins the magnets at more than 1,000rpm, despite the absence of iron cores in the coils to prevent cogging.
The generator produces over a kilovolt from the 14,700 turns of 38 AWG copper wire, which is enough for the voltage multiplier and electrodes in the vacuum chamber.
Hyperspace Pirate’s plasma generator could be useful for igniting things and providing high-voltage excitement in survival situations, according to the article. It could also be used to ignite neon signs.
