A new security feature has been created by an automotive YouTuber to stop car thieves from stealing vehicles, using a decoy killswitch to trigger the alarm.
Although the vehicle appears to be started, the decoy switch next to the steering column has tripped the alarm system, which can only be deactivated by a separate hidden relay reset.
There is also another secret switch that actually turns off the fuel pump, which means a thief would have to locate both of these to steal the vehicle.
The system works on the principle of “security through obscurity”, making the car more trouble than it is worth to steal compared with other easier targets.
Comments from other users revealed other similar measures, such as pulling the distributor cap or the fuel pump fuse, or using a remote-controlled relay to trigger the alarm or cut the fuel supply when parked.
