Summary

  • Before the latest addition, Nintendo’s Animal Crossing game only allowed gamers to fill their virtual houses with furniture and items that were available in the game.
  • Now, thanks to the work of decrazyo, gamers can add an x86 emulator that boots a Linux environment to their in-game house.
  • The emulator runs on the GameCube and takes advantage of the already-existing Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) emulator in Animal Crossing on the GameCube.
  • This is done by uploading a ROM to the GameCube memory card, which allows users to run Linux in their virtual house.
  • The Linux environment is only running at approximately 1/64 of its normal speed to due the emulated nature of its running.
  • This isn’t the first time decrazyo has created an emulator, having previously ported Unix to the classic NES console.
