A historical snapshot of ham radio in the 1960s has been released by the ARRL and shows the radio hobby at a time when it was still a commonplace medium for global communication
The film, The Ham’s Wide World, features US Senator and ham radio operator Barry Goldwater and is introduced by famous radio personality Arthur Godfrey
It showcases vintage gear from Heathkit, Swan, and Drake and features a Field Day event and a Mexican grocer communicating with a US teenager, as well as a portrayal of hams providing communications during a wildfire.
Ham radio today is much the same, with many users still communicating worldwide, although new modes such as microwave communications and satellite working have been added to the traditional voice communications.
