Summary

  • The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has created a new Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) Power Export Permitting Standard, to help unify the process for sending power to and from EVs and the grid, or to homes, NEMA says the new standard “could put money back in electric vehicle owners’ pockets.”
  • However, while the new standard will help on the technological side of bidirectional charging, vehicle owners will only participate in backing up the grid if utilities develop “attractive remuneration plans”, prompting media outlet Hackaday to state: “Here lies the problem: V2G is still financially pointless.”
  • It cited surveys showing that the majority of EVs are charged at off-peak times overnight, but that very few were charged at peak times, when energy is most expensive and therefore most profitable for the car owner, before the energy is fed back into the grid.
