An established hack is turning surplus LCD panels into standalone monitors with driver boards, and there are boards available on eBay and AliExpress for almost any widespread panel.
This project used old iPad screens and enhanced the hack by including a 3D printed case, a lithium polymer battery for portability, a battery level monitor, and a Bluetooth audio board and speaker as add-ons.
This resulted in a compact and neat desktop setup that could be taken anywhere, and the creator has made all the files available for download so others can make their own.
Another variation could be to include a Raspberry Pi to make a version of an iPad, and the project raised the bar for what can be done with recycled iPad screens.
