Reverse-Engineering SKS Airspy Tire Pressure Sensors for Custom Firmware
1 min read
Summary
A group of biking enthusiasts has developed its own version of the software for a bicycle tyre pressure monitoring system, enabling them to use the device’s data with third-party apps.
The SKS Airspy system uses a proprietary software and firmware to monitor pressure and transmit it via radio frequency to either a Garmin or a dedicated app on a smartphone.
However, cyclists Moises Gonzalez, Aaron Willemz and Stefan Kottwitz rewrote the firmware, enabling the device to use the open ANT+ standard, which is widely used in cycling computers and fitness watches.
The team made the firmware and installation guides for the customised SKS Airspy available on GitHub.
The device is attached to the valves on a bicycle wheel to monitor pressure.
