Electric vehicle (EV) fires are less common than those involving petrol or diesel cars, but do occur and pose unique challenges.
A controversial debate in the firefighting community is whether EV battery fires are best extinguished by water or simply allowed to burn themselves out.
Research conducted by the UL Research Institute and reverse engineering experts Munro & Associates aims to characterise EV fires to find the best way to fight them.
Results demonstrating the best approach for different EV models are accompanied by footage of a Tesla Model 3 being set alight.
The video also highlights the value of Munro & Associates’ work, which is independent of EV manufacturers.
It can be used to develop safe methods for repairing EV batteries, rather than simply replacing them.
