A developer has posted instructions online for turning an old Kindle e-reader into a dedicated weather dashboard displaying information such as temperature, humidity and air quality.
The process involves jailbreaking the Kindle, enabling the installation of additional software, before installing a Node.js server on a separate machine to scrape and convert weather data into a suitable image for the Kindle to display.
The creator encountered a number of issues when porting the project, includingimage ghosting on the e-ink display and sluggish behaviour when the device is unable to connect to the internet.
However, the hack provides an avenue for giving a new lease of life to oldKindles that would otherwise no longer be in use, and the source code is available on GitHub.
